Dairy and Nut Free Alternatives

Want to join in on that donut party but can’t find a donut that is dairy free? Unable to eat the chocolate on St. Patrick’s Day?

After years of being allergic to dairy (in addition to peanuts and tree nuts), I’ve found some delicious options that act as great alternatives. It’s always good to have a list of treats and foods that you can swap out for the unsafe ones so that you don’t feel left out when food is a part of social events. Here are a few dairy (and nut) free alternatives that you can add to your list for the next swap!

Disclaimer: A lot of these brands may not accommodate everyone’s food allergies. I advise reading the list of ingredients thoroughly before trying a food in order to avoid an allergic reaction. Even if the food claims to be safe, double-checking the ingredients is always another way to ensure better safety. Always have your allergy medications (EpiPen, Benadryl, AuviQ, etc.) ready when trying new foods.

Donuts: Katz

Ever since I was young, Katz’s donuts have always been a go-to dessert for me. With many flavors, including both glazed and powdered donuts, this is a perfect alternative for any breakfast treat. Katz also has pies, cakes, breadcrumbs, muffins, stuffing mix, and much more. Plus, you can even order Katz online!

Ice Cream: Talenti Sorbetto

Not only does Talenti make gelato, but they also make dairy-free sorbetto! In flavors like raspberry and mango, this sorbetto could definitely beat any ice cream. They now also have mini sorbetto bars, like popsicles, for another delicious summer treat! Also, they just released some new flavors, which include summer strawberry and zesty lemon.

Chocolate: Enjoy Life

A classic food allergy friendly brand, Enjoy Life will stand in for all your chocolate treats! Add Enjoy Life chocolate to smores, baked goods, or even as a snack. They sell chocolate bars in addition to white chocolate, dark chocolate, and more. I even know people without a dairy allergy who love Enjoy Life chocolate chips, too!

Brownies and Cakes: Duncan Hines

Anytime I need a birthday cake or brownies, I use Duncan Hines! I was surprised and ecstatic when I found out that Duncan Hines was safe for my allergies, and I have since loved their lemon cake mix, yellow cake mix, and dark chocolate brownie mix!

Disclaimer: this company is not dedicated to allergen free products so double check all ingredient labels before consuming. Some of the Duncan Hines cakes are NOT dairy-free so ensure you are only eating the items safe for you. Double check for any cross contact as well.

To top your cakes, I would recommend Pillsbury frosting. Yes, this classic company does have some dairy-free items! Be sure to try their chocolate fudge frosting and their vanilla frosting.

Milk: Ripple

Ripple is a great milk alternative, especially for those allergic to both nuts and dairy. When almond milk isn’t an option, Ripple is! Ripple comes in various flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, and more. Even my sister, who doesn’t have food allergies, loves Ripple!

Popcorn is a classic movie snack, but not all popcorn options are dairy-free, especially when prepackaged with butter. BOOMCHICKAPOP has a delicious sweet and salty kettle corn that can be added to any movie night! SkinnyPop Popcorn even has an option of classic microwave popcorn, so you never miss out on any part of the movie night experience.

Whether to add to your breakfast toast or to cook vegetables with, Earth Balance butter is the perfect dairy-free butter alternative! My whole family uses Earth Balance even though I’m the only one with food allergies because it tastes amazing!

From gingerbread to chocolate chunk cookies, Sweet Loren’s is a delicious dairy-free cookie alternative. Not only are they easy to pop into the oven, but they are also gluten-free! I especially love how Sweet Loren’s has an endless selection of flavors, so you never have to miss out on any cookie option.

I hope you enjoyed this list of dairy-free alternatives. Whether you are planning a party or just eating breakfast, I hope the brands above help make life with a dairy-allergy a little bit easier. Be sure to keep this list handy whenever you need a dairy-free alternative!
